Crystalens®

What is the Crystalens®?

  • The first and only FDA approved accommodating intraocular lens
  • The only lens that uses the natural focusing ability of the eye
  • The only lens that provides a single focal point throughout a continuous range of vision from far to near

In Clinical Trials:

  • 98.4% of patients implanted with crystalens in both eyes could pass a driver's test without glasses
  • 100% could see intermediate (24" to 30") without glasses, the distance for most of life's activities
  • 98.4% could see well enough to read the newspaper and the phone book without glasses
  • Some patients did require glasses for some tasks after implantation of the crystalens
  • Significantly more patients implanted with a crystalens (88.4%) could see better at all distances then patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%)

How does the Crystalens® accommodate IOL work?

Most people’s vision remains stable until their late 40’s. At that time, the eye’s natural crystalline lens begins to gradually enlarge and harden. This is followed by the eventual formation of a cataract. Overtime, it becomes difficult for the muscle in the eye to automatically focus your lens on the people and things in your life that matter most. This is known as loss of accommodation, or presbyopia, and its earliest symptom is difficulty seeing things close-up.

The crystalens is the first intraocular lens, or IOL, for cataracts that also provides accommodation. How? All other IOL’s are fixed and stationary within the eye. Their particular design prevents them from accommodating, or moving to focus. The crystalens is unique because it actually accommodates to reconnect you continuously and effortlessly to everything in your day, no matter the distance.
